Homeowners and small business owners face a higher risk of vulnerability in the presence of a disaster. According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses accounted for 99% of U.S. businesses. From 2021-2023, there have been 66 billion dollar natural disasters in the U.S., amounting to $616.8 billion in damages. This does not include the additional damages from COVID-19. In 2024 alone, there have been $25 billion worth of damages before the pending hurricane season (NOAA).

Despite the significant presence of small businesses, there has been little reference to the socioeconomic stressors that compound with natural hazards, exacerbating the economic affects of a disaster. The existing socioeconomic conditions exacerbate the already vulnerable small businesses, leaving them ill prepared for the event of a disaster. It is important to not only support small businesses in a time of increasing disaster severity and frequency, but to also provide them with the resources necessary for long-term success and resilience.
